Mr. Gutman, aHolocaust survivor who teaches modern Jewish history at Hebrew University inJerusalem and is the director of the research center at Israel's national Holocaustmemorial, Yad Vashem, intelligently outlines the elements that weakened theJewish resistance movement in Warsaw. These included not only Nazi air attacksand arson, food and water shortages and the neglect of the Polish undergroundresistance movement, but also the abandonment of the ghetto by its most prominentpolitical leaders and arguments among the many rival Jewish organizations overa course of action. One wishes that Mr. Gutman had recorded eventschronologically rather than switching back and forth in time. One longs formore information about heroes like Mordecai Anielewicz, the brave undergroundleader who escaped Warsaw but returned to command the uprising, and YitzhakZuckerman, the uprising's deputy commander, who survived to write about it.Still, Resistance, which is published in association with the UnitedStates Holocaust Memorial Museum, lucidly illustrates how a few hundred Jewishfighters with Molotov co*cktails, homemade grenades and no military trainingtwice forced the Germans to retreat from the ghetto and refused to go likelambs to the slaughter.
