Site Kit plugin (WordPress): Set up your Google tag (2024)

You can measure behavioral data about your site with Google Ads and Google Analytics. Follow the steps in this article to set up a tag for your Google Ads or Google Analytics account. Learn more about Installing your tag with a website builder or CMS.

Before you begin

Google has developed an official WordPress plugin called Site Kit. Site Kit makes it easy to set up and configure key Google products, including Google Tag Manager, giving you authoritative and up-to-date advice on how to succeed on the web. Review the list of Google products you can activate in Site Kit.

    The instructions for setting up the Google tag are different for tag IDs starting with "AW-" (usually, Google Ads accounts) and tag IDs starting with "G-" (usually, Google Analytics properties). Follow the instructions below that correspond with your tag.

    If you have a tag starting with "AW-"

    1. Log in to your WordPress website.
    2. Make sure your site is publicly accessible (meaning your site isn't in maintenance mode or only accessible through a password).
    3. In the left navigation menu, click Plugins.
    4. Click Add new at the top of the Plugins page, then search for "Site Kit".

    6. Once the plugin is installed, from the menu on the left, click Plugins.

    8. Once the plugin is activated, on the left hand side, click Site Kit.

    12. After granting permission, verify site ownership by clicking Proceed.
    13. Grant access to Google account data by clicking Allow.

    15. You have now configured the plugin.
    16. Click Go to my dashboard to continue.
    17. From the menu on the left, select Site Kit, then Dashboard.

    22. Analytics is now configured.
    23. To include Google Ads, go to Site Kit settings by clicking Settings on the left-hand menu.
    24. Click Site Kit.

    26. Paste your Adwords conversion ID (AW-) in the box provided and click Confirm changes.Site Kit plugin (WordPress): Set up your Google tag (12)

    If you have a tag starting with "G-"

    1. Log in to your WordPress website.
    2. Make sure that your site is publicly accessible (your site isn't in maintenance mode or only accessible through a password).
    3. In the navigation menu on the left, click Plugins.
    4. Click Add New at the top of the “Plugins” page, then search for “Site Kit”.

    6. Once the plugin is installed, from the menu on the left, click Plugins.

    8. Once the plugin is activated, on the left-hand side, click Site Kit.

    11. After you grant permission, click Proceed to verify site ownership.
    12. Click Allow to grant access to Google account data.

    14. From the menu on the left, select Site Kit, then Dashboard.
    15. Click Set up Google Analytics.
