Frances Smallwood, 75

ESCONDIDO – Frances A. Smallwood, 75,died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.

Born Feb. 9, 1925, in Toronto, Canada, she lived in Escondido for20 years.

Mrs. Smallwood retired in 1992 from the Escondido Elementary SchoolDistrict. She attended the Church of Resurrection, was active inRancho Bernardo Senior Center Bowling League, Escondido SeniorCenter and a retirement group from Escondido Elementary SchoolDistrict.

Mrs. Smallwood was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph V.Smallwood on Jan. 10, 1986. She is survived by sons anddaughters-in-law Richard and Jennifer Craig of San Jose, Don andCharlene Smallwood of Escondido, Bob and Cynde Smallwood of MissionViejo; brother and sister-in-law John and Erica Rose of BritishColumbia; sister and brother-in-law Lil and Cy Hodgkiss of Ontario;grandchildren Shelley Diaz, Amy Payne and Marcy Kiar; andgreat-grandchildren Rebekah, Caleb, Jessica Diaz and Maggie andZoey Payne.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, atAlhiser-Comer Mortuary with the Rev. Jim Kostick of Church of theResurrection officiating.

Joseph Monaco, 74

OCEANSIDE – Joseph Elias Monaco, 74, diedSaturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Tri City Medial Center.

Born July 15, 1926, in Ambler, Pa., he lived in Oceanside for 11years. He was the owner of Gem Aero Aviation Supplies for 25 yearsand served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Monaco was preceded in death by his son, Michael Monaco in1999. He is survived by his wife, Constance Monaco of Oceanside;sons Steven Monaco of Seattle, Mark A. Monaco of Ventura and JosephMonaco of Carlsbad; daughters Kathleen Domzalski of HuntingtonBeach and Elizabeth Gross of San Juan Capistrano; sisters NancyMelograno, Molly Scalfaro and Elizabeth Myers, all of Ambler, Pa.,and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Allen Brothers Mortuary in Vista. AMass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at St.Francis Catholic Church and burial will follow at AscensionCemetery, Lake Forest.

Patricia Dixon, 69

OCEANSIDE – Patricia Ann Dixon, 69, diedThursday, Jan. 18, 2001.

Born July 7, 1931, in Milwaukee, she lived in North County for 21years, and currently lived in Oceanside.

She was a homemaker for 44 years and an avid traveler.

Mrs. Dixon is survived by Joanne Kelhart, sons Patrick Dixon of SanDiego, Daniel Dixon of Vista and Donald Dixon of Vista; daughtersand sons-in-law Nancy and Santiago Rodriguez of Vista, Teresa andDouglas Smith of Chandler, Ariz., and Kathleen Dixon of Escondido;brothers William Shea of Fallbrook, Joseph Shea of Dallas andThomas Shea of Fallbrook; sister Kathleen Sullivan of Oceanside;grandchildren Christopher and Melissa Rodriguez, Timothy and TylerSmith and Breanna Schnoebelen and numerous nieces and nephews,great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial will take place at a later time.Inurnment is at HolyCross Cemetery in Culver City.

Mark Brinkman, 48

LAS VEGAS – Mark Brinkman, 48, diedThursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his home of heart failure.

Born June 18, 1952, in Escondido, he lived in Las Vegas for sevenyears. He attended St. Mary’s and Del Dios schools, graduating fromOrange Glen High School. He was employed in construction work,principally in dry wall. He held a contractor’s license until 1995and enjoyed racing cars.

Mr. Brinkman was preceded in death by his father, William Brinkmanin July 2000. He is survived by mother Joan Floyd of Escondido;brother and sister-in-law Paul and Candise Brinkman of ValleyCenter and sisters and brothers-in-law Jean and Jim Wold of ValleyCenter, Teresa and Mel Windsor of LaQuinta, Mary and MichaelPromisco of Bozeman, Mont.

A memorial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at McLeodMortuary in Escondido with the Rev. John Verstegen officiating.

Jett Reilly, 6

VALLEY CENTER – Jett Colton Reilly, 6,died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Children’s Hospital, San Diego, as aresult of an accident.

Born Dec. 4, 1994, in San Diego, he lived in Valley Center for sixyears. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints and attended Valley Center Primary School. He loved allsports, playing with his brothers, sisters and cousins. He loved toread and color.

Jett is survived by his parents Kris and Russell Wayne Reilly ofValley Center; brothers A.J. Reilly, Trevor Reilly, Drew Reilly andBeau Reilly, all of Valley Center; sister Savanna Reilly of ValleyCenter; grandparents Wayne and Gail Reilly of Valley Center andHarlan and Dorthy Johnson of Minnesota, Ty and Cindy Johnson ofMinnesota and Erick and Wendy Johnson of Minnensota; uncles andaunts Keith and Tori Reilly, Scott and Wendy Kimball, all of ValleyCenter; cousins Shaun and Cameron Kimball, Paige, Regan, Sidney,Trent and Rhett Reilly, all of Valley Center, Aubrey, Taggert,Riley, Tyrel, Colton, Hannah, Ellen, and Nathan Johnson, all ofMinnesota.

A funeral is scheduled for noon, Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Valley Center with the Rev.Tom Hefferon officiating. Burial will follow at Valley CenterCemetery.

OCEANSIDE – Celestina V. Lorenzo, 69,died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in Moreno Valley.

Born June 19, 1931, in the Philippines, she was a resident ofOceanside for 13 years.

Ms. Lorenzo is survived by son Reynaldo Camacho of the Philippines;daughters and sons-in-law Nancy Grant of Oceanside, Elena andWilfred Asuten of the Philippines and Luzminva and Ednel Naguit ofthe Philippines; sister Carmen Bautista of the Philippines andeight grandchildren.

Visitation was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, atEternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral was held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan.21, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. David Plankofficiating. There was a private cremation.

Myrtis Gulath, 77

FALLBROOK – Myrtis “Dixie” Fife Gulath, 77, died Friday,Jan. 19, 2001, at home of natural causes after a longillness.

Born April, 7, 1923, in Rayville, La.,she lived in Fallbrook for 19 years. She worked in the ZionLutheran Thrift Shop and was an active member in the church. Shealso served as a volunteer driver for Meals-on-Wheels in LaJolla.

Mrs. Gulath was preceded in death by her parents Blanche and WatsonH. Fife in March 1978. She in survived by her husband of 42 years,Raymond Gulath of Fallbrook; daughters Sandra Bagley of Salt LakeCity and Pamala Wilson of Fallbrook; daughter and son-in-lawPatricia and William Hogue of Lakeside; brother Alvin Fife ofOrlando, Fla., sisters Vivian Warren of Montclair and Jane Burgessof Houston; grandchildren Todd and wife Brittney Bagley and PaigeBagley of Salt Lake City, Joshua and Sean Hogue of Lakeside andgreat-grandchild Dain Bagley of Salt Lake City.

Chad Hama, 19

CARLSBAD – Chad Jace Hama, 19, diedWednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, as a result of a motorcycle accident inSan Luis Obispo.

Born June 6, 1981, in San Jose, he lived in Carlsbad for 17 years.He was a business major at Questa College in San Luis Obispo andplanned to transfer to Cal-Polly next fall. He was interested inall sports.

Mr. Hama is survived by his parents, Milo and Susan Hama ofCarlsbad; sister Jill Hama of Santa Barbara, brother Tayler Hama ofCarlsbad and grandparents Masakazu and Mitsu Hama of San Jose.

A Catholic vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m., tonight, Jan. 23, at theEl Camino Memorial/Sorrento Valley Chapel in San Diego. A Mass willbe celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at St. John’s CatholicChurch, in Encinitas, followed by interment at the Old Mission SanLuis Rey Cemetery, San Luis Rey.

Born Nov. 12, 1944, in Westridge, Ark., she lived in Oceanside for29 years. She was a secretary for Scripps Clinic in Encinitas.

Mrs. Fleming is survived by son Robert Fleming of Vista; daughtersRenee Fernandez of Oceanside; brothers Robert Johnson of Etowah,Ark., Bobbie Johnson of Yorba Linda, Nathan Johnson of Blytheville,Ark., Harvey Johnson, Fred Johnson and Grady Johnson al of Osceola,Ark.; sisters Nora Ferguson of Etowah, Ark., Peggy Morgan ofCaraway, Ark., Carolyn Moore of Monette, Ark. and Martha Jo Hass ofOceanside and two grandchildren.

Born March 24, 1917, in Cleveland, she lived in the San Diego areasince 1945. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Rath was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, JosephE. Rath, in Feburary 1989. She is survived by son David Rath ofNevada City; daughters Cindy Ives and Mary Jo Campbell, both of SanDiego; brothers John Erpenbeck of Oregon and Eugene Erpenbeck ofRamona; sister Helen Wheat of Napa and three grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 24, at HolyCross Chapel in San Diego with graveside services with burialfollowing at Nuevo Memory Gardens.

ESCONDIDO – Margarete Berta Schafer, 97,died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.

Born March 8, 1903, in Hemer, Germany, she lived in Escondido for40 years.

Mrs. Schafer is survived by son Friedhelm Schafer of Murrieta andson-in-law Heinz Hopp of Vista; sister-in-law Elli Stampp ofEscondido; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and severalgreat-great grandchildren.

A graveside service with inurnment is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday,Jan. 26, at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Jim Kostickofficiating.

Annamaria Valenzuela, 35

ESCONDIDO – Annamaria Valenzuela, 35,died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in San Diego.

Born Nov. 21, 1965, in Escondido, she lived in Escondido for 35years.

She was a homemaker and a longtime member of St. Mary’s CatholicChurch. She loved all animals, cooking, sewing, hair dressing andcomputers.

Ms. Valenzuela is survived by her mother Lorenza Valenzuela ofEscondido; brothers Anthony Valenzuela of Escondido; brother andsister-in-law Rubin and Brenda Valenzuela of Vista and sisters andbrothers-in-law Maria and Mario Cornejo of Escondido and Rosemarieand John Volpe of Temecula.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m.Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A Mass will becelebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Oakhill MemorialPark.

Howard Humphrey, 75

VISTA – Howard Tyler Humphrey, 75, diedSaturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Tri City Medical Center.

Born Aug. 26, 1925, in Hanover, N.H., he lived in Vista for fourmonths and was formerly of Oceanside.

He retired 10 years ago as an electronic engineer for the U.S.government. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Humphrey is survived by his wife Helen Humphrey of Vista; sonsJames Humphrey of Scotsdale, Ariz., and Thomas Humphrey of Phoenix;daughters Susan Humphrey of San Ramon and Carol Falls of Ramona;brother Robert Humphrey of Buffalo, N.Y. and fourgrandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Jan. 23, atAllen Brothers Vista Chapel. Burial will be at Ft. RosecransNational Cemetery. There will be a private cremation.

Born May 14, 1926, in Japan, she lived inVista.

Mrs. Drew was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Drew, about18 years ago. She is survived by her three sisters in Japan.

No services are planned at the request of the deceased. Hercremains will be scattered at sea.

Arthur Leighton, 76

ESCONDIDO – Arthur W. Leighton, 76, diedMonday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Oceanside.

Born July 29, 1924, in Massachusetts, he lived in Escondido for 15years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Leighton is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sigrie and BillPotter of Pleasanton and two grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, atEternal Hills Mortuary. There will be a private cremation.

June Schurr, 69

VISTA – June Schurr, 69, died Thursday,Jan. 18, 2001.

Born Sept. 13, 1931, in Florida, she lived in Vista for two years.She was a retired medical secretary and a member of the UnitedMethodist Church in Vista.

Mrs. Schurr is survived by daughters, Susie Schurr and LaurenSchurr, both of Ramona and son Ken Rumbaugh of Ramona.

Memorial serviced is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, atUnited Methodist Church with the Rev. Lanny Arrowsmithofficiating.
