If you have your own blog, welcome to the club (it’s a big one). For the people who do not have a blog, whether that be you or one of your friends, these are 5 things that people without blogs should know about before starting.
- The road is tough, but the treasure is on the other side of that road. When you are blogging, you will never know how close you are to getting that big increase in traffic. It took me almost a year of blogging before I saw a dramatic increase in traffic. This picture will give you an idea of the dramatic increase in traffic your blog can get.
- Choose your URL carefully. A really long URL is more challenging to remember than a short URL. When in doubt, have your name as the URL to your blog.
- The first blog post does not get tons of traffic. In fact, that first blog post may not get any traffic at all. However, all of that traffic will come sooner or later.
- The success you achieve from blogging depends on how much time you put into it. Publishing blog posts only once a month that are always short shows that blogging does not take up a lot of time. In order to be a well-known blogger, you should dedicate 15-30 minutes a day to blogging.
- Use WordPress. Their plugins are awesome, the statistics tell you a lot about your blog, there are plenty of themes to choose from, and the dashboard organizes all of WordPress’ features where you can easily access them. Whether you use the dot-com or dot-org version of WordPress, it is the best option for bloggers.

Interesting viewpoint. I know WordPress.com is free but I didn’t care much for editing the HTML when I was starting out. You also get the domain as yoursite.wordpress.com with the free version but Blogger has a similar free domain set up.

I am happy to hear that you love WordPress. There really isn’t a better way to create a blog than with WordPress. The paid version is even better but the free version comes with a lot too. Remember to enjoy blogging 🙂

Is it worthwhile to move from the free version of WordPress and pay for the version hosted by WordPress?
Or would some other host for my free WordPress blog be better in your opinion?

That depends on how much blog traffic you get. If you are just starting out, I would recommend using the free version. As you become more well-known and start making revenue from your blogging efforts, that’s when I would switch to the paid domain.

I’m not much of a coder and like my WordPress theme. My advice would be to hire someone from UpWork who knows how to code the WordPress theme you are looking for. Swiftly.com is also a great option.

I think writing valuable content on HubPages and then backlinking to your blog, YouTube videos, and other content on the web is an excellent strategy.

I opted against using my name as a url. No one outside my family can spell it. The name I chose for the blog I’m most committed to is much shorter. I am totally committed to one blog right now and post to others as I have something to say and / or extra time. I use Bogger for two and WordPress for the other three.

Your commitment to your blog is more important than the URL. I understand why you would opt to use another URL, and that is fine. Your blog’s URL doesn’t have to be your name for your blog to become successful.

Good advice, Marc! I had to chuckle when I saw this on Twitter this morning. I did a public announcement of my new blog yesterday and since then I’ve been seeing post after post about things to know about blogging – or before starting a blog. Happy to report that I had a good launch even though I’ve read all that great advice AFTER launch!
