3Are we beginning to praise ourselves again? Are we like others, who need to bring you letters of recommendation, or who ask you to write such letters on their behalf? Surely not! 2The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our[a] hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you. 3Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This “letter” is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

4We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. 5It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. 6He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.

The Glory of the New Covenant

7The old way,[b] with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. 8Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! 10In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. 11So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!

12Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. 13We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was destined to fade away. 14But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ. 15Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand.

16But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

The Old and the New Way

3Are we making it sound as if we think we are so important? Other people write letters about themselves. Do we need to write such a letter to you? 2You are our letter. You are written in our hearts. You are known and read by all men. 3You are as a letter from Christ written by us. You are not written as other letters are written with ink, or on pieces of stone. You are written in human hearts by the Spirit of the living God. 4We can say these things because of our faith in God through Christ. 5We know we are not able in ourselves to do any of this work. God makes us able to do these things. 6God is the One Who made us preachers of a New Way of Worship. This New Way of Worship is not of the Law. It is of the Holy Spirit. The Law brings death, but the Holy Spirit gives life.

7The Law of Moses was written on stone and it brought death. But God’s shining-greatness was seen when it was given. When Moses took it to the Jews, they could not look at his face because of the bright light. But that bright light in his face began to pass away. 8The new way of life through the Holy Spirit comes with much more shining-greatness. 9If the Law of Moses, that leads to death, came in shining-greatness, how much greater and brighter is the light that makes us right with God? 10The Law of Moses came with shining-greatness long ago. But that light is no longer bright. The shining-greatness of the New Way of Worship that brings us life is so much brighter. 11The shining light that came with the Law of Moses soon passed away. But the new way of life is much brighter. It will never pass away.

12We speak without fear because our trust is in Christ. 13We are not like Moses. He put a covering over his face so the Jews would not see that the bright light was passing away. 14Their minds were not able to understand. Even to this day when the Law is read, there is a covering over their minds. They do not see that Christ is the only One Who can take the covering away. 15Yes, to this day, there is a covering over their hearts whenever the Law of Moses is read. 16But whenever a man turns to the Lord, the covering is taken away. 17The heart is free where the Spirit of the Lord is. The Lord is the Spirit. 18All of us, with no covering on our faces, show the shining-greatness of the Lord as in a mirror. All the time we are being changed to look like Him, with more and more of His shining-greatness. This change is from the Lord Who is the Spirit.

3Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?

2Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

3Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

4And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

6Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

7But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

8How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

9For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

10For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

11For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

12Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:

13And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

14But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

15But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

16Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

17Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

18But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

3Are we beginning to commend ourselves(A) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(B) to you or from you? 2You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(C) 3You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(D) not on tablets of stone(E) but on tablets of human hearts.(F)

4Such confidence(G) we have through Christ before God. 5Not that we are competent in ourselves(H) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(I) 6He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(J)—not of the letter(K) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(L)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

7Now if the ministry that brought death,(M) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(N) transitory though it was, 8will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9If the ministry that brought condemnation(O) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(P) 10For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12Therefore, since we have such a hope,(Q) we are very bold.(R) 13We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(S) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14But their minds were made dull,(T) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(U) is read.(V) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(W) the veil is taken away.(X) 17Now the Lord is the Spirit,(Y) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(Z) 18And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a](AA) the Lord’s glory,(AB) are being transformed into his image(AC) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

FAQs

What is the main message of 2 Corinthians 3? ›

It revealed that sinful human beings cannot lead the righteous lives required by God to see His glory (2 Corinthians 3:7). The glory of the new covenant of God's grace and forgiveness for sinners through faith in Christ far surpasses the glory revealed by the old covenant of the law.

What does it mean the letter kills but the Spirit gives life? ›

When law enforcement fails to recognize the spirit of the law, and they simply emphasize the letter of the law, there it ends up “killing” the very thing it intended to preserve.

What two things are contrasted in 2 Corinthians 3? ›

Notice that Paul uses two contrasts. First, the letter is not written by ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. Second, it is not written on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

What does unveiled faces mean in 2 Corinthians? ›

With the veil gone, all those in Christ have unveiled faces, boldly looking at Christ, who is the glory of God. We can now see Him for who and what He is. This act of seeing, of understanding, the nature of Christ begins the process through which God transforms His children into the image of Christ.

What is the difference between the Old Covenant and the new covenant? ›

The Old Covenant is a lifeless code of moral demands, but the New Covenant provides God's power to live for Him. God gives the same moral instructions in both covenants – but in the new covenant he provides his Holy Spirit to supply both the motivation and the power to fulfill those instructions (Phil. 2:13).

What is the explanation of 2 Corinthians 3:18? ›

2 Corinthians 3:18 Reminds Us We are Being Transformed

And in the process find ourselves being transformed by God through His Spirit, from one degree of glory to another, until one day, in the words of 1 John 3, we shall see him and become like him.

What is the difference between the letter and the spirit? ›

The letter of the law is what the law states; the spirit of the law is a social and moral consensus of the interpretation of the letter.

What does the seven last words mean in the Bible? ›

What are the 7 Last Words of Christ? Traditionally, these seven words (which are more like “sayings” that contain more than a single word) are known as words of Forgiveness, Salvation, Relationship, Abandonment, Distress, Triumph and Reunion.

What does 2 Corinthians 3 verse 6 mean? ›

2 Corinthians 3:4-6 compares a life lived under the Law with a life lived under grace. Paul knew the Corinthians had begun to lose their Gospel influence when they began embracing the false message of the Judaizers. The Law, even though divinely given, could not transform a person. No standard can change a heart.

Who is speaking in 2 Corinthians 3? ›

The epistle reading for today reminds us that the revelation of Jesus' glory is so spectacular that it initiates the transfiguration of all who are in Christ. In 2 Corinthians 3, Paul claims that even the Corinthian church is being transformed to reflect God's glory.

What does 2 Corinthians 3 3 mean? ›

He merely delivered the letter, but it was written by Christ with the Holy Spirit of the living God, instead of ink. And it was written onto human hearts, instead of stone tablets. Paul's point is that the Corinthians' faith is genuine. Christ indisputably wrote Himself into their hearts through the Holy Spirit.

What is the message of 2 Corinthians 3/7? ›

Context Summary

The glory of the Old Covenant is fading just as it did on Moses' face after he had been with God. Those who come to God through faith in Christ are forgiven for their sins and able to look on God's glory. The veil of unbelief must be removed by the Spirit through Christ.

What does "veil" mean spiritually? ›

In the Bible, the word "veil" is often used to represent spiritual blindness. When we are spiritually blind, we cannot see God's truth or his plan for our lives. We may be deceived by the enemy, or we may simply be unaware of the things that God wants to show us.

Why did God blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts? ›

God hardened their hearts after they continually disobeyed and rejected Him. God warned His people through Moses about the consequences of disobedience. God's laws protect individuals, cultures and nations from evil. To disobey is to destroy others.

What does eyes were veiled mean? ›

A veil can indicate you are closed off, in hiding. Someone holding on to a big secret, or who has withdrawn from the world, might be envisioned with a veil. In this case, she would be saying she cannot see you or doesn't know the real you, or senses you have unresolved secrets or deceit in your life.

What is the overall message of 2 Corinthians? ›

In this letter, the apostle Paul leads the Corinthian congregation back to a right relationship with Christ, and he also strengthens their relationship with himself as their founding apostle. He demonstrates how God heals all the wounds of his people and shows his saving power in their weaknesses.

What are the lessons of the book of 2 Corinthians? ›

The letter reminds the Corinthians to turn from their worldly ways and to think and live in ways that honor God. Likewise, Paul's letter encourages us to look at our own lives so we won't forget what really matters.

What is the message that Paul wants the church in Corinth to understand? ›

Paul writes to the church in Corinth to address some big problems: division, sexual misconduct, confusion about food and worship practices, and controversy surrounding Jesus' resurrection. Paul says these issues can be resolved because Jesus is alive.

What is the meaning of 2 Corinthians 3 1? ›

He compares the limited glory revealed by the Old Covenant between God and Israel with the far greater glory revealed by Christ to all who come to Him by faith. That glory is revealed only when the veil of unbelief is removed through Christ by the Holy Spirit's power.
